Mame project

This was actually the first arcade cabinet that we ever tackled... The idea originally was to get on the back page of Maximum PC magazine with a crazy PC mod, but we soon discovered that we weren't the first people to ever dream up a Mame cabinet. It started with a $10 empty cabinet purchased at an auction from the "dead row", and after some sanding, we discovered that it was actually an old Defender cabinet! The artwork was pretty messed up, and so was the cabinet, so the sides were completely sanded, filled, and sanded again. After a couple of coats of paint, it looked like a million bucks. The cabinet did not come with a control panel, but that was ok, because we decided to go with an X-Arcade controller, which worked out pretty good. We had to move a few of the buttons to get it to fit into such a tight spot, so we built a little box to go inside the coin door to hold the drives and buttons. The power button is located inside the coin door, so you can lock the door, and then nobody can turn the machine on (great for keeping your buddy's off your machine when you're not around!). We also decided to wire snap-switches to the coin-rejects, so when you pressed the coin-reject, you were basically inserting a quarter. The monitor came off of eBay, and it was out of an old poker machine of some kind, but it was VGA, so that worked out well with the $500 home-made computer. The art came from a fella that was looking for someone to help him out with a website, so we got that for free. It's really nice art, unfortunately, he's not doing it anymore! All in all, it came out pretty nice. It sold on eBay for around $1200 a couple of years ago to a doctor in Myrtle Beach. We haven't heard from him in awhile, we hope our baby is doing well...
At rest...

...and at play (yup, Robotron!)

The X-Arcade was an easy solution for us...

But we still needed a keyboard and mouse for Windows! Probably could've slapped a coat of paint on the coin door!

You won't find that behind too many coin doors!

That's the setup inside, your looking at the back of the coin door in the front, mobo mounted directly to the side of the cabinet on the right. The power supply is in front of the mobo. We actually chopped a drive bay cage out of an Antec cabinet to mount the drives. We had to sawzall the front of the cabinet to mount the keyboard/mouse drawer. The cold-cathode light was a last-minute addition, in the spirit of PC modding (and to light the keyboard!).
